Haohua’s HFC-23 conversion technology and industrial application project selected as major innovation for carbon peak and neutrality

The 2024 Green Low-Carbon Innovation Conference was held in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province on Aug. 15, 2024. During the conference, the results of the "Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovations for China's Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality in 2023" were announced. One of the top innovations announced was the project titled "Key Technology and Industrial Application of the Conversion of Conventionally Controlled Potent Greenhouse Gas HFC-23." This project was jointly submitted by the Zhejiang Research Institute of Chemical Industry, which is affiliated to Sinochem Lantian Co., Ltd., and Zhonghao Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.

HFC-23 is generated as a byproduct during the production of HCFC-22. It is a highly potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential 14,800 times that of carbon dioxide. The industry commonly employs high-temperature incineration to dispose of HFC-23. The Zhejiang Research Institute of Chemical Industry and Zhonghao Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. have collaborated to develop an advanced and environmentally friendly technology that scales up HFC-23 conversion using engineering methods. This technology offers several advantages, including shorter processing time, high selectivity for desired products, and lower investment costs. It provides a technical solution for reducing HFC-23 emissions sustainably in the fluorine chemical industry.

The "Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovations for China's Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality in 2023" is an initiative organized by the Green Low-Carbon Innovation Union of Innovation China. It selects exemplary practices that represent the cutting-edge and latest developments in carbon peak and carbon neutrality technologies. These practices also facilitate the green and low-carbon transformation of the economy and society, and promote high-quality development.
